OnePlus 13R Specs Features Performance Review
The OnePlus 13R, released on January 14, 2025, is a feature-packed smartphone offering high-end specifications at a competitive price point.
Three main aspects define the OnePlus 13R. First of all, the large 6.78-inch display is brilliant and vibrant, which enhances viewing conditions.
The huge 6,000mAh battery comes next; it provides you two days on one charge. At last, the 13R shows performance suitable for handling the toughest games. Although not market-leading, the cameras are decent.
For some, OxygenOS may be a touch finicky; the main flaws in an otherwise rather superb “affordable” flagship are the absence of wireless charging and submersible water resistance.
Review of OnePlus 13R: Two-minute overview
Delivering extended battery life, a brilliant display, and plenty of power in a sleek, premium package, the OnePlus 13R expands on the successful formula of its predecessor, the OnePlus 12R.
Although its pricing is not as competitively low as the first “flagship killers” of the company, the OnePlus 13R offers much while only slightly sacrificing in a few tiny areas if you're looking for a flagship phone without the, quite honestly, eye-watering price tags.
This is just the second time an R-Series phone has gone global; the first “R” branded models (of series 9, 10, and 11) did not reach European or North American borders.
Launched with the flagship OnePlus 13, the less tricked-out—and consequently more reasonably priced—variant is the OnePlus 13R. See this phone as Google's “A” range of Pixel phones and Samsung's “FE” variations of its high-end S series.
Even in full sunshine, the vivid and reasonably bright 6.78-inch display is simple to operate. The screen is flat, and its flatness complements the aluminum frame of the phone, therefore providing a beautiful viewing experience.
The large 6,000mAh battery of the OnePlus 13R will last two days on a single charge; even power users will get more than a day's worth before having to grab the charging wire. But because there is no wireless charging, grab the cord you will need.
Under the hood, there is plenty of power; the former flagship generation Snapdragon CPU at its core is readily aided by 12GB of RAM. The 13R can therefore practically handle almost everything you throw at it.
Although the trio of cameras on the back may not have the very newest capabilities of the current-gen flagships, most situations would benefit from its excellent point-of-view camera.
For people with little hands, holding the 13R might be a bit challenging, but since this is a big phone. And you should use caution near water, as this phone is not waterproof. It is simply splash-proof; hence, it will be OK in the rain.
Though held just out of reach of some of the very newest hardware, saved for its non-R number twin, the OnePlus 13R is an impressive smartphone that inherits many of the features from the brand's last flagship phone.
Review of OnePlus 13R: pricing and availability
- Price for OnePlus 13R is $599 / £679.
- In North America and Europe, available with 12GB RAM + 256GB ROM.
- India offers a 16GB + 512GB model.
Regarding purchasing the OnePlus 13R, North America and Europe have only one storage option—256GB ROM + 12GB RAM—which keeps things simple.
For those living in India, there is a more robust 512GB + 16GB version that would have some in Western markets gazing enviously across Asia.
Though coming in £30 more costly in the UK, the OnePlus 13R pricing, $599 / £679, matches the launch price of its predecessor, the OnePlus 12R, in the US.
With the same launch pricing in the US as last year's 256GB OnePlus 12R, the 13R is well positioned in the market, giving a huge screen, a big battery, and lots of performance at a price range that undercuts Apple. For UK consumers, the £30 price rise is a touch annoying, but OnePlus has improved on its predecessor, and the 13R still provides a good all-around experience.
Unlike the OnePlus 12R, this pricing point places the OnePlus 13R nearer the upper end of the “affordable flagship” market and provides the US exclusively with 256GB ROM + 12GB RAM. With 8GB/128GB of RAM and storage this time, no less expensive option exists.
Though the latter is already a year and a half old at the time of writing, it is more costly than the smaller, more palm-friendly Pixel 8a—Google's own attempt at a cheap flagship—but equally priced to the AI-loaded Samsung Galaxy S24 FE and alternative Nothing Phone.
The OnePlus 13R's exceptional battery life will be one of its main attractions; yet, if your only concern is battery life in a big-screened phone, you may want to check the Honor Magic 7 Lite. Though it has less power and storage and isn't sold in North America, it's a bit cheaper and has an even larger battery (6,600 mAh).
Three headlining specs make up the OnePlus 13R. With a maximum brightness of 4,500 nits, the massive 6,000 mAh battery will keep you running for two days, and smooth performance is owing to the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 CPU as the brand's previous generation flagship, the OnePlus 12.
Along with rapid 80W cable charging and 256GB of storage to keep all but the most active power users happy, there are three cameras around the rear.
Review on OnePlus 13R: design
With a sleek metal frame around the device, sandwiched on each side by glass, the OnePlus 13R is a neat piece of hardware.
Apple's iPhone 15 Pro and 16 Pro series, as well as the Oppo Find X8 range—the latter of which shares many design characteristics with the OnePlus 13 series—the flat sides are evocative of both brands as they are part of the same overall corporation.
The first OnePlus phone to use Gorilla Glass 7i, which producer Corning says is “specifically engineered to address the need for improved drop protection and scratch resistance,” covers the screen and back of the phone to complete the luxury package.
This implies the 13R should be able to withstand the occasional drop and knock, although I didn't really test this during my evaluation period with the phone.
Although the looks and feel of the OnePlus 13R are not totally distinctive, it is made well and beats its price tag.
Those with little hands will find the size of the gadget oppressive—particularly for one-handed usage—while I would have wanted the power and volume controls on the right of the 13R positioned further down.
Particularly for my thumb, the volume rocker stretched out the hand in uncomfortable shuffles to increase the level. Should OnePlus drop them a few millimeters below the buttons, they would naturally fall beneath the thumb, facilitating handling.
Though it has the same location ailment as the volume and power, it's located just a little too high on the left of the phone for my liking. OnePlus's now-famous alert slider is available on the OnePlus 13R, allowing a simple method to choose between quiet, vibration, and ring modes.
Although this was a fresh innovation in the early days of OnePlus, its presence now seems a little unnecessary because user behavior has changed over time, and fewer users are often moving between ring states. Regarding the alert slider, former OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei even tweeted to note, “Most people never use it.”
Centrally on the phone's bottom edge, the USB-C connection is flanked by the speaker and the SIM tray—which accommodates two cards. Only the large round camera housing breaks the simple, understated finish of my Nebular Noir-colored gadget on the rear.
It's aligned with one side of the phone, giving the centrally positioned camera bump on the Find X8 devices a little point of difference that helps to somewhat offset the weight but isn't a problem during everyday usage. By keeping the 13R's weight to a modest 206g, OnePlus has been able to enable comfortable hand placement.
The IP65 water resistance level of the phone is one letdown. Though an IP68 certification—water resistance for submersion—is not unusual in this price range, an increase over the IP64 rating of its predecessor guards against jets of water.
OnePlus's display is generating significant buzz, and the good news is that it delivers on the hype. It's large, brilliant, and vivid.
Despite sharing the same size as the Honor Magic 7 Lite, another big-battery rival, it's a substantial offering, significantly larger than the Pixel 8a's 6.1-inch screen and marginally larger than the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE (at 6.7 inches).
Apps may find plenty of real space here, and the thin, uniform bezels all around enhance its premium look. The circular notch at the top of the 16MP front-facing camera is the sole screen interruption.
The screen boasts a resolution of 1264 x 2780 (1.5K), resulting in a pixel density of 450 ppi. Although OnePlus claims the 13R can produce a maximum brightness of 4,500 nits, in practical usage you will not really perceive that degree of brightness.
Whether inside or outside, the OnePlus 13R's screen worked really well in harsh light throughout my phone usage. Should you be lucky enough to live in a very sunny environment, you may be sure you will be able to see what is on-screen in direct sunshine.
And due to Aqua Touch 2.0, the OnePlus 13R keeps working as the temperature changes and rain begins to fall. While I took the phone into the rain, the screen kept responding well while my usage was undisturbed by the weather; rain may create problems on other phones when the screen is confused by water droplets, resulting in unregistered taps or erroneous inputs.
Glove Mode, which lets you interact with the screen while donning woolen or sheepskin gloves (up to 0.5cm thick), is another great feature of the OnePlus 13R. This mode isn't on by default; you must explore the accessibility menus in the Settings applications to activate it (you may search “glove” in Settings to locate the mode faster).
Once turned on, I was amazed by how sensitive the screen was even wearing woolen gloves. The difference is clear, as the screen responded to nothing when gloves were worn with the mode turned off.
Though this is not surprising, interactions do need a bit more force to be used than non-glove usage. If you want to enjoy a round of PUBG while on vacation in Lapland, Finland, you may wish to wait till you're indoors and gloveless before parachuting into combat, as OnePlus does indicate that glove mode does not enable gaming. Opening and shutting applications, navigating the UI, surfing social, and typing out messages are all simply accomplished, however.
Review of OnePlus 13R: program
An Android 15 smartphone, the OnePlus 13R runs on the most recent Google mobile operating system, which underpins the software you can see on the screen.
It's not pure Android, as OnePlus has put its OxygenOS 15.0 interface on top, giving the phone a familiar look and feel for consumers of the past generation of products.
This results in a quite distinct appearance and feel from the native Android platform (available on Pixel devices). Along with the standard system offers, my OnePlus 13R also comes pre-loaded with extra applications.
These included Booking.com, LinkedIn, Facebook, Lyft, AliExpress, Netflix, and Amazon Music. Although some of these pre-installed applications might be helpful, the good news is they can be completely deleted from the phone, therefore freeing more of the apps you want.
Unlike the OnePlus 13R, I have seen phone companies pre-install many more applications and even restrict customers from deleting them; hence, what OnePlus has done isn't cause for worry.
OnePlus claims that by cutting the total size of OxygenOS 15 by 40%, it consumes less of the 256GB of internal storage capacity, freeing more space for applications, games, pictures, videos, and more.
The overlay of OnePlus offers a great spectrum of personalizing options, which lets you make the OnePlus 13R unique to you. There is enough to investigate from a choice of home screen widgets and the ability to change the size, shape, and appearance of app icons to varied options from the drag-down motion to reach the notifications bar and fast settings.
I could have two applications side by side on screen using the Open Canvas capability from the OnePlus Open and Pad 2. I could pull the horizontal bar that splits the screen up and down to adjust the two applications.
Another option is to launch an app in a floating window and travel around the remainder of the phone's interface, keeping the chosen app open in a little part of the screen. Useful if you wish to search for information in other applications while viewing a video or part of a crowded group chat.
I could even drag and “pin” two of these floating windows to the edge of the screen, reducing them to a translucent program logo buried off the side of the display. A fast touch on the logo revealed it once again as a floating window.
While it’s a little fiddly to enable split screen or floating window (and to pin these), it’s amazing when you have multiple apps all working at once—especially if you have two apps on split screen and then a third in a floating window. The OnePlus 13R has these multitasking features.
With OnePlus pledging four years of software upgrades and six years of security patches for the smartphone, the OnePlus 13R comes future-proofed too. Although this is a decent deal, it is not industry-leading. Apple has provided five years of upgrades for some time; Google and Samsung provide seven years of software and security updates on their most recent models.
And this would not be a smartphone from 2025 devoid of any reference to artificial intelligence. The AI Editor option with four tools is found in the Photos app—the OnePlus version, not Google's Photos app. Further about them in the section on cameras.
Pre-loaded on the OnePlus 13R, Google's Gemini AI assistant also provides access to functions such as Circle to Search and Magic Compose (for aid creating text messages).
OnePlus 13R review: cameras
Headlined by a 50MP Sony LYT-700 primary sensor alongside a 50MP telephoto sensor, the OnePlus 13R integrates a trio of sensors in the large, circular camera housing, hence supporting the 2x zoom. Comprising an 8MP ultra-wide sensor with a 112-degree field of view, the sensor array completes Additionally included is an LED flash to accentuate gloomy areas.
Although there is no wide-angle lens to enlarge the view to suit more faces, you get a 16MP selfie camera on the front. You will either have to cope with the knowledge some folks may not make it in the frame or push cheeks together.
With fast access icons for Google Lens, exposure, retouch (beautification mode), and filters guaranteeing you're Instagram-ready in no time, the OnePlus 13R camera software launches fast and is loaded with capabilities.
Swiping horizontally over the shutter button allows you to quickly access smartphone basics “Video” and “Portrait” on each side of the normal “Photo” option.
‘Pro' mode offers precise options for ISO, shutter speed, exposure, focus, and white balance—plus there's the option to shoot in RAW rather than JPG for more editing flexibility in applications like Photoshop for people who wish to hone their shooting expertise.
Explore the “More” area for more options like night, panoramic, slow-mo movie, and time-lapse.
In essence, the OnePlus 13R camera app offers many choices and customizing possibilities; the good news is it produces decent images in the default setting for people who desire not to have to play around with settings.
Generally speaking, the 13R is a rather competent smartphone camera. Although it falls short of the top camera phones available, this is to be anticipated as it ranks a level below the genuine premium flagship models.
Camera Sample Check
Following the primary 50MP camera comes the advice for people who want to take their smartphone photography seriously on the OnePlus 13R, the same as with its predecessor. It gains from EIS (electronic image stabilization) and OIS (optical image stabilization) to enhance output.
Both during the day and at night, you can rely on the phone as a consistent point of view to record inside and exterior views. During a midnight stroll over a light path, the OnePlus 13R camera really caught my attention as the default settings effectively manage the changing lighting conditions.
Walking the route, I was able to get a sequence of spectacular low-light shots with no effort; this is precisely what I want from a smartphone camera. For social and group meetings, something that may provide outstanding outcomes fast and simply.
Additionally providing strong editing features, the OnePlus 13R lets you play around with images much beyond the moment of capture. As discussed before in this review, OnePlus has added many AI-powered editing capabilities in their own gallery (the 13R has two picture galleries, the default OnePlus app, and the Google Photos app — the latter of which contains editing features as well).
As the name implies, AI Unblur can take your hazy images and improve focus. It may be used on any photograph, not just ones shot with the 13R, but I felt the difference created—slight—was evident.
AI Detail Boost turned out to be very helpful. Once again, working on any picture, this improves busy photographs to provide improved clarity and contrast across your shots.
AI Eraser and AI Reflection Eraser follow. Since most cellphones let you delete people, animals, or objects from your photographs, the former you will probably be acquainted with. It struggles with busier situations and complicated backdrops, but it works well here.
Reflection Eraser extends its functionality by attempting to remove reflections from windows, glass, or screens. I experimented with this on many pictures, with varying success. Though generally improvements were achieved, I was unable to totally eliminate reflections in any of the examined photographs.
Although the artificial intelligence tools are a good addition to the OnePlus 13R overall, they do not provide an experience that distinguishes them from like features on other phones.
Review of OnePlus 13R performance
With so much power, the OnePlus 13R guarantees it keeps almost anything you could hurl its way in line.
Although the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor is not the newest top-tier Snapdragon 8 Elite variant from Qualcomm, it is the same flagship chipset used in the OnePlus 12. Supported by a robust 12GB of RAM, the 13R maintains its powerful performance.
The performance paired with the 120Hz panels creates fast, smooth browsing on social media, and the UI flows well. Apps load quickly, but the OnePlus 13R feels less responsive when playing more demanding games compared to other genuine flagships.
Whether it was perusing social media, streaming video, checking emails, doing work (including writing portions of this very review), or enjoying a well-earned gaming break, given the price range of this phone, I was more than satisfied with the performance I was receiving. It's not really a problem.
From 3DMark, Geekbench, CrossMark, JetStream, and WebXPRT 4, I did many benchmark tests to fully push the OnePlus 13R's capabilities. With flagship-level (or near-flagship) performance, it performed well, therefore confirming the plenty of power this phone offers.
Benchmark scores for OnePlus 13R
Test | Result | Notes |
3DMark (Regular, Wild Life Extreme) | Score: 4894 / FPS: 29.31 | Better than, according to 3DMark, 93% of the results from all other devices. |
3DMark (Regular Solar Bay) | Score: 8563 / FPS: 32.56 | Better than, according to 3DMark, OnePlus 12, Xiaomi 14, and iPhone 15 Pro. |
Geekbench 6.3 (CPU) | Single-Core: 2153 / Multicore: 6317 |
Start a game, and you will find the Hyperboost performance settings of the phone immediately active, providing you with real-time phone condition data throughout your gaming session.
Thanks to a temperature sensor buried beneath the display, you can quickly monitor your fps (frames per second), latency, and how hot the OnePlus 13R is becoming via the drop-down panel.
There are three options from which to pick; the default is “Balanced.” Alternatively, go to “Low power,” which can assist in prolonging your gaming session by limiting touch responsiveness and screen refresh, therefore extending the operating life of the battery.
Then there's “Pro gamer,” which feeds all power to your game, therefore draining batteries and raising temperature. A pop-up even advises you to think about just utilizing this mode in ambient temps.
The Hyperboost menu offers even more options for experimentation, including GPU configuration adjustments, key feature on and off controls, and screen recording capabilities to document spectacular encounters. Simply said, the OnePlus 13R has lots to offer if your passion is mobile gaming.
At 60 fps and its maximum graphics level (at 30 fps), the OnePlus 13R easily handled Genshin Impact. Although load screens processed more slowly than high-end flagship phones, this did not compromise gameplay. Although the phone warmed, it never got to be uncomfortable.
The performance of the biometric scanners caught my attention also during testing. Underneath the display toward the bottom of the screen, the fingerprint sensor is positioned such that your thumb will always rest on it while unlocking.
It also operates well, with superb responsiveness and no read failures throughout my phone tenure.
You may also choose to turn on face unlock. It's easy to register your face, and in daylight the OnePlus 13R can swiftly identify you and unlock even from unusual angles, like covertly peering at your phone from beneath a desk.
Battery check
The massive 6,000mAh battery of the OnePlus 13R is one of its main selling features; it gives the phone great lifetime and peace of mind of really all-day battery life without the requirement of even considering reaching for a charger.
On days when we reduced our gaming and video viewing, we could effortlessly disconnect at 7am and reconnect at 11pm, with the battery still at 50%. During our heavy-use days, we discovered we would still be going into bed at the end of the day with the battery at least 20%.
From a single charge, the OnePlus 13R can provide two days of battery life with somewhat more deliberate use—that is, without games and films and restricted social media—without having to switch to a power-saving mode.
Looking to extend the overall life of the massive battery pack within, the SUPERVOOC charging speed has been lowered from 100W on the OnePlus 12R to 80W on the new OnePlus 13R.
With the correct fast-charging plug converter (you only receive a USB-C cable in the box in the UK), the OnePlus 13R can go from 1% to 100% in as little as 52 minutes. The 80W charging still offers a fair quantity of power in a short period of time.
In 15 minutes, the OnePlus 13R restored from 15% to 31% using a rapid 60W charging block; after 30 minutes, the battery returned to 48% (raising 33% points in half an hour). Respectable top-up times—especially if you have to quickly add charge before leaving the home.
Using an 80W charging block will help you to maximize the supported charging speed and hence optimize these charging times.
The fact that the OnePlus 13R lacks wireless charging is the one flaw in its battery life. This capability has been saved for its more expensive cousin, the OnePlus 13; hence, you will need a cable to top up the 13R.
Should one purchase the OnePlus 13R?
Nokia 13R scorecard:
Attributes | Notes | Rating |
---|---|---|
Value | Undercutting core flagships, the 13R is perfectly positioned in the market at $599 / £679, offering a big screen, battery, and performance. | 4.5 / 5 |
Design | Though it is a touch large for little hands, the 13R looks and feels the part in the hand from front to back. Just avoid dropping it into water. | 4 / 5 |
Display | Even in direct sunlight, the large, brilliant, and colorful OnePlus 13R screen offers a first-rate viewing experience. | 4.5 / 5 |
Software | For those who like tinkering with their phone, OxygenOS 15 offers plenty of personalizing choices; OnePlus has promised four years of upgrades. | 4 / 5 |
Cameras | Most situations allow you to depend on point-and-shoot photography expertise to generate outstanding images for sharing on social media and in group conversations. | 4 / 5 |
Performance | Thanks to a strong chipset at its core, gamers will adore the Hyperboost performance options; plenty of performance is therefore accessible. | 4 / 5 |
Battery | Excellent two-day probable battery life on one charge, perhaps even longer. Shame, however, there is no wireless charging. | 4.5 / 5 |
Conclusion
Though the processor is a year old, the OnePlus 13R offers outstanding battery life along with flagship-level performance thanks to a 6,000 mAh battery and a snappy Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 engine.
At a lower price point, the OnePlus 13R offers a huge screen experience that is really good. Whatever you do on the incredibly vivid and colorful 6.78-inch display will appear excellent.
Combine the battery life, performance, and display to acquire the OnePlus 13R, all the markings of a great gaming tool. The hyperboost performance options are the ultimate feature.
Though it still trails behind the competition, OnePlus has made some progress by declaring that its OnePlus 13 series devices would get four years of OS upgrades and six years of security patches. Apple, Google, and Samsung each provide more years of OS upgrades.
If your main concern is battery life when choosing a new phone, the OnePlus 13R with its 6,000mAh power pack most definitely makes a strong argument; yet, the Honor Magic 7 Lite offers a larger battery (6,600mAh) at a cheaper price, even if it is not as powerful and not sold in North America.
With an IP65 dust and water resistance classification, the OnePlus 13R allows the phone to withstand drips and jets of water—such as rain—but it is not protected should you unintentionally drop it in the bath or sink or swimming pool.
